Birthday Party Game for Teenagers

From LoveToKnow Party

Although it’s certainly more difficult to come up with birthday party games for teenagers than it is to come up with party games for your six-year old, don’t be fooled into thinking there are no games that teens will enjoy. The key is to choose games that induce laughter and silliness in teens, just like one would do for kids; a few games like this will break the ice in no time.

Balloons in Birthday Party Games for Teenagers

Balloons make a lot of noise when they pop, and the actions which cause them to pop can be a source of fun for a teenager’s birthday party. The games below all include balloons popping, which just about guarantees laughter and fun.

Running Relay

In this relay, each team of teenagers has a balloon, and one by one, the teens "run" to a point across the lawn or across a large room and back with the balloon held between their knees. This game can actually be played quite safely indoors because holding the balloon with one’s knees makes real running completely impossible.

If a player drops the balloon, he has to carry it back to the starting point and start over again. When a player successfully returns back to the starting point, she passes the balloon to the next player. The first team who has all participants carry the balloon across the room and back is the winner.

Sitting Relay

This relay allows for more running, so an outdoor location is advisable. In this balloon relay, each team has a large pair of baggy shorts and a destination across the lawn where a stack of balloons are waiting. One by one, the players put on the shorts, run across the lawn, take a balloon, sit on it to pop it, and then run back to their team. The shorts are passed off to the next player and when all players have each run and popped a balloon, the team has finished and is the winner.

Pin Popping

This game is best played indoors in a room filled with balloons. Before the party, prepare two special hats with a pin poking out of each one. Two players at a time wear these hats and try to pop balloons without using their hands. Set a timer and let two players compete; whoever pops the most balloons in that time is the winner. This can also be done in teams, with one person representing each team at a time, but the score being cumulative for the whole team. Make sure the judges counting are unbiased!

Other Active Games

If you don’t want the noise of balloons popping, here are a few other active games that teenagers typically enjoy.

Hula Hoop Circle

Have the teens break into groups of about six and make a circle. Place a hula hoop in each circle on the arms between two players and have them hold hands so that the hoop doesn’t fall. All players have to hold hands and can’t let go of each others’ hands at any time. The task is to pass the hula hoop all the way around the circle by stepping through it without letting go of each others’ hands. The first group to get the hoop all the way around the circle wins.

Pop Charades

Make a list of pop songs that the teens are sure to know (you can throw in some that they will find annoying too, just for kicks). Have two teams and play a traditional game of charades. One person draws a song title out of the hat and has to act it out. If his team guesses correctly in the allotted time, they get a point. The team with the most points at the end is the winner.

Quieter Games

For teens who either aren’t into running around or who are confined inside a small house for the party, these games are great options.

Truth and Lie

Give each teen an index card and have them all write down four things that are true about themselves and one thing that is a lie. Put all the cards in a hat and then draw them out one by one. The rest of the group first has to guess whose card it is, and then has to guess which of the five statements is a lie.

Describe the Drawing

This game is played in pairs, with the two members of each pair sitting back to back. One person in the pair receives a picture and has to describe it to the other player. The person hearing the description has to draw the picture based on what she hears from her partner. At the end, some good laughs should be had comparing the original to the copy.

These birthday party games for teenagers should provide not only laughter, but also a good way to break the ice. Games don’t have to be played during the whole party. However, if you play a few games at the beginning, most teens will have more fun during the rest of the party because they are more comfortable with each other and ready to enjoy themselves.
