Something to Celebrate

For many high school seniors, graduation is a fun time to celebrate surviving 12 or more years of school and being awarded a diploma that says you’re somewhat educated. While many graduates still go on to college or trade school, high school graduation is no less momentous. For some students, the event is even more significant because they may be the first child in their family to graduate or they may have overcome significant challenges in order to receive their diploma. Whatever their individual circumstances, students have earned the right to be proud as they graduate, and celebrating with a graduation party is a festive way to commemorate the occasion.

Types of High School Graduation Parties

Graduation parties can be organized in several different ways. Some parties may be arranged by the school in honor of the departing seniors, while other parties are planned by families to celebrate the graduates’ achievements.

School Parties

High schools often host a range of senior-oriented events to give students plenty of opportunities to celebrate with their peers. Prom is one such event, and some schools will arrange formal senior dinners, awards nights, and other activities. Graduation-related parties, however, are often the most popular events.

  • Grad Night: This classic all-night party is usually provided as a safe celebration for all seniors on the night of graduation. Students may need to report to the party location by a certain time, and they may not be permitted to leave until morning to ensure that students are not engaged in dangerous or undesirable behaviors. Activities at grad parties frequently include music and dancing, games such as arcades, bowling, or casino simulations, and other fun options like palm reading, handwriting analysis, group pictures, and door prizes. Some schools may charge an entry fee for students to attend, while others host the party for seniors free of charge.
  • Yearbook Signing: A yearbook signing party is typically held near the end of the school year but before school is actually out. Students will be able to exchange signatures and share memories of the year, and many schools offer a seniors-only variation of a yearbook event to honor the soon-to-be graduates.
  • Senior Trip: Senior class trips are a more elaborate form of graduation party. Often, the senior class will vote on a destination such as a nearby metropolitan area, a local resort, or an amusement park. Depending on the financial resources available and whether or not students are expected to pay for the trip, travel may be by bus or plane, and students have the opportunity to share the fun of a school-sanctioned getaway with their classmates.

Individual Parties

Classic graduation parties are planned to honor either one graduate or a small group of graduating friends. These events are not usually associated with the school and instead are family affairs that have become a popular way to celebrate high school graduation.

  • Open House: A come-and-go open house is the most popular format for a graduation party, particularly when party guests may need to visit several events in one day. These are casual parties that usually offer a few light refreshments throughout an afternoon or evening soon after the graduation ceremony.
  • Formal Dinner: Some families may prefer to organize dinner parties to honor the graduate in a more formal manner. To save on party planning hassle, many of these parties take place in restaurants, often of the graduate’s choosing. These are easy events to organize very close to graduation, particularly if the commencement ceremony is scheduled for the morning or afternoon.
  • Themed Party: A more exciting type of graduation party is one with a fun theme. These parties often honor several graduates at once because the guest of honor typically invites friends to join in the celebration. Pool parties are popular choices, or a movie marathon may be suitable depending on the student’s preferences. The party could also be themed around the graduate’s prospective college or career.

Tips for Planning a Graduation Party

High school graduation parties may seem simple to plan, but they can be tricky to coordinate when the guest of honor’s friends are all busy with their own parties. Tips to make the planning easier include:

Enjoy a last fling with friends.

  • Be sure of the graduation before scheduling the party. If the student’s academic status is in jeopardy, it is more important to bolster their grades than plan to celebrate a graduation that may not happen.
  • Coordinate party dates, times, and graduation invitations with the graduate’s friends’ parties. This ensures that everyone can join in different parties without missing their own.
  • Schedule the party within a few days of the graduation ceremony. Parties that are scheduled late could interfere with summer jobs or early college registrations and summer terms.
  • Do not register for graduation gifts. If the graduate will be attending college, it is easy for guests to choose appropriate helpful gifts, but no gifts should be required to celebrate the occasion.

Graduation Party Alternatives

A graduation party isn’t right for every student. Some students don’t feel comfortable in that type of social situation, or they may prefer one of these more practical alternatives:

  • A vacation to a destination of their choice
  • Using the costs of a party for college expenses instead
  • A “new” used car they can take to college
  • More expensive gifts such as a new computer or other equipment they may need for college or a new job

High school graduation parties, whether they are hosted by the school or the graduate’s family, are a fun way to celebrate the momentous achievement of graduating from high school in the company of family members and friends.
