Homemade Party Decorations
From LoveToKnow Party
Homemade party decorations can create a unique party atmosphere, save money when entertaining on a budget and contribute to a greener planet.
Benefits of Homemade Party Decorations
Originality
Unlike store-bought party decorations, homemade decorations can highlight your originality and show your guests what a welcoming and willing host you are. You can create a unique feel for your party and have fun in the process. When you use homemade party decorations, the party starts well before the guests arrive. First think of an original theme for the party. Consider a 70s beach party theme, an autumn party or a Super Bowl Party. Then crank up some party music to get you in a festive mood and start creating.
Cost Savings
Another benefit to making your own decorations is the cost savings. A trip to the party supply store can easily cost hundreds of dollars once you pay for the paper products and the streamers. After you stamp your invitations and buy food and drinks, throwing a party can really set you back financially.
Homemade decorations don't need to cost anything. Decorate a dance area with shimmering stars. Cut out star shapes from old boxes or magazine covers and then cover them in tinfoil. Poke holes in the top, string some ribbon through them and hang them from a light fixture or ceiling panel. These sparklers will transform an ordinary living room into a disco or planetarium.
Candles are another great way to decorate on a budget. Group different kinds of candles together on a large platter to create low-cost centerpieces. The key to this look is volume, not style. There is no need to buy lots of candles at the store. Use what you have and mix and match. If you don't have enough candles to fill a platter, then you can buy packs of inexpensive votives to supplement your look.
Balloons always create a festive atmosphere. There is no need to purchase an expensive "bouquet" of helium balloons. Instead buy a low-cost bulk package and some wrapping ribbon. Blow up all of the balloons, tie colored ribbons to them, curl the ribbons with a pair of scissors and let a group of them float to the ceiling. Hanging in bunches, they will create a fantastic transition area from an ordinary house to party central. If you're hosting a dinner party, then tie big bunches to the backs of the chairs at the dining room table. Just be sure to tie them high enough so that they don't interfere with conversations.
EcoFriendly
A third benefit to homemade party decorations is that they can be ecofriendly, if you plan appropriately. Keep the common green mantra in mind: reduce, reuse, recycle. It will help you come up with creative ideas.
Reduce waste by reusing items you already own as decorations. At Christmas, colorful ornaments in a bowl make a beautiful centerpiece. Instead of having flowers delivered, group potted plants in a large bowl. Or place colorful fruit in a bowl and mix in some greenery.
Recycle plastic shopping bags into pompoms and plastic water bottles into stars or snowflakes. To make the pompoms, cut the handles and the bottom off the bag. Then split the seams, and cut the bag into two rectangles. Cut both rectangles into long continuous strips. Wrap one strip around your hand and then the other strip. Tie a handle from the bag around the strips on your hand. Cut through the end loops with scissors taking care not to cut the handle. Hold the handles and fluff your pompoms.
To make the plastic stars and snowflakes, carefully slice of the bottom of the bottle with a knife. Next trim the curved part with scissors so you are left with a flat disk. Cut the disks into stars or snowflakes. Poke a hole in the top and hang with string or thread. You can also create garlands by stringing groups of stars or pompoms together.
There are even more potential ideas, limited only by your creativity. Create photo collages of your guests. Cut confetti from colored paper. Wrap empty boxes for a holiday or birthday party. With a small budget and a big imagination, you can create your own party décor.
