Planning a 50th Birthday Party
From LoveToKnow Party
If you're planning a 50th birthday party, there are lots of ideas that you could use to make the event a success. Choosing a theme for the party will make everything simpler, since you can easily tie everything in, from the invitations to the decorations.
50th Birthday Party Themes
If you decide to choose a theme while planning a 50th birthday party, think about the guest of honor and what he or she would enjoy. Some ideas for a great party theme include:
- The year you were born
- Special interests or hobbies, such as a sports team or classic movies
- A luau, vacation, or beach theme
- A formal tea party
- A poker or casino party
Since a 50th birthday is a milestone, you could also simply focus on that number, with a "Fifty is the New Forty" or "Half Century" theme.
Steps in Planning a 50th Birthday Party
Whether you're planning a big birthday bash or a small get-together for close family and friends, there are a number of things to consider. It helps a great deal to plan the party with at least one other person, so you can share duties and brainstorm ideas together.
Invitations
The invitations should tie in with the theme of the party. Party supply stores have a wide range of birthday party invitations, and 50th birthday party invitations are quite common. If you're having trouble finding the perfect cards, you can look online for free printable party invitations. These are usually easy to customize.
Make sure to include all of the details in the invitations, such as:
- Name of the birthday honoree
- Date and time
- Location
- The theme of the party
- Name and phone number of the person to R.S.V.P. to
If the party is to be a surprise, make sure you indicate this on the invitations as well.
Date and Location
Choose a date that is close to the actual birthday being celebrated, preferably on a weekend when most people will be available to attend. Decide whether you'd like the party to take place during the afternoon or in the evening.
The location can be just about anywhere. If the weather is nice, you can hold the party outdoors, in someone's backyard or even at the beach. For outdoor parties, have an indoor option available in case the weather decides not to cooperate. Indoor parties can be held in someone's home, at a hall, or at a restaurant.
Party Decorations
If you've chosen a theme, the party decorations should reflect the theme itself. If the theme is something other than simply a 50th birthday, you could combine 50th birthday decorations with those that incorporate the chosen theme.
Birthday party decorations can be standard things like balloons and streamers, or you can add special touches such as:
- Family photos, enlarged or posted as a collage
- Fresh or fabric flowers
- PiƱatas
- Album or magazine covers from the year the birthday boy or girl was born
- A slideshow of photos set to run in a loop
Food and Drink
The food and drink offered at any birthday party will depend on the time of day the party is being held, and whether there are children in attendance. Sometimes the theme of the party will also come into play, for instance, if you're planning a tea party or a wine and cheese event.
If the party is being held at a restaurant the food will be taken care of. Otherwise, you could plan a potluck party to which every guest brings a dish, or serve simple finger foods, buffet style. If alcohol is being served, make sure there are plenty of non-alcoholic options available too, for those who don't drink or will be driving.
Classic foods from the year or decade when the birthday person was born can also be a big hit, especially if that ties into your theme.
Games and Activities
Party games are always fun, and if the 50th birthday party has a theme like a casino party or a luau, activities are easy to plan. For some other ideas, consider:
- Trivia about the birthday honoree
- A roast, if the guest of honor has a good sense of humor
- Guessing games, such as Name That Tune, or guessing a classic movie title using quotes from the film
- Hang several similar photos in a group, with only one of them being of the birthday boy or girl, and ask guests to identify which one is the guest of honor. This works especially well if they are baby photos.
Once you have all of the plans in place, relax and enjoy the party! Watching everyone having a great time is a satisfying reward for all of the work needed to put the party together.
