Quinceanera Waltz
From LoveToKnow Party
The Quinceanera Waltz is time-honored tradition. Danced by the Quinceanera and her escort, or her Quinces Court, many hosts will pull out all of the stops to make sure guests are treated to an entertaining dance segment.
The Quinceanera Court
The “Quinces Court” is made up of the Quinceanera and up to fourteen of her closest friends and relatives, all around the same age. They’re compared to a bridal party because of their color-coordinated formal dresses and tuxedos. The young ladies are called “damas” and then young men are known as “Chambelán”. Ideally, the Quinceanera will appoint seven damas and seven Chambelán, making a total of fifteen (including herself) people in the Court.
When the party begins, the Master of Ceremonies will introduce each member of the Quinces Court and they will each stand in their assigned (and rehearsed places). Finally the Quinceanera’s name is announced and she will make a grand entrance.
Many times, the hosts will pay for the Quinces Court to take dance lessons so they can perform a choreographed dance routine for their guests. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a waltz, but many Quinceanera choose a formal dance to go with the formal attire. Those who don’t hire a professional choreographer, will create a dance routine with help from family and friends.
The Quinceaneara Waltz
The Quinceanara will dance a traditional waltz, or vals, with her father. The father/daughter dance is a tender, emotional moment, one everyone in attendance looks forward to. After a while, she can switch to dance with her escort and the Quinces Court can join in. This waltz might also be coordinated so all of the changes flow smoothly and without effort.
Songs
The song the Quinceanera dances to should mean something special to her and her family, especially when considering it will be videotaped and talked about for years to come.
The Quinceanera can choose from one of several traditional songs:
- ““Quinceañera”
- ”La Ultima Muñeca” (The Last Doll)
- ”De Niña a Mujer” (From Child to Woman)
- ”Cumpleaños” (Happy Birthday)
- ”Butterfly Kisses”
If you’re not interested in a traditional tune, choose a tasteful alternative. While a playful, upbeat tune adds a fun element to the event, sexy or suggestive group numbers are inappropriate for a fifteen-year-olds birthday party. For suggestions, talk to your disc jockey, event planner, master of ceremonies or band leader. They’ve done this before and can tell you what others have danced to in the past.
Have Fun
The important thing is to have a good time and not to stress out over the choreography. Your Quinces is an important milestone, it’s not about the dance. It’s about tradition and celebrating your entry into womanhood with your loved ones. Relax and have fun.
