Teen Party Themes
From LoveToKnow Party
Most teenagers feel they have outgrown themed parties, but teen party themes don’t have to involve childish color schemes, cartoon characters, or corny games.
What Makes a Theme
For a theme to be effective, the decorations, party invitations, and overall scheme need to be coordinated around a central design concept. The atmosphere of the party should reflect the theme with similar colors, activities, and refreshments, but most of all, the theme should appeal to the interests of the guest of honor as well as his or her friends. Teenagers’ interests can occasionally be hard to discern, particularly since teens change their hobbies and interests frequently, but some basic themes are suitable for nearly any teen party.
Ideas for Teen Party Themes
Teenagers can be finicky, but a clever theme can bring together friends for a fun time without seeming too structured or cliché. Some popular options for teen parties include:
- Beach or Pool Parties: Volleyball, sunbathing, pool games, a barbeque and enjoying the sun are great elements of a water-based teen party, or add a tropical or luau flair for a deeper theme.
- Casino Themes: Teens may not be able to gamble for real, but a casino night theme lets them indulge in games of chance and bet with their friends.
- Movie Parties: A movie theme may have a generic Hollywood theme or may focus on a teen’s favorite actor or actress, a recent blockbuster, or just a fun movie. An extra option is to actually reserve a local movie theater for the party.
- Concert Themes: A teen who loves music or is in a band will love a concert theme complete with souvenir tour t-shirts and a dancing mosh pit.
- Sports Parties: A sports theme is great for both athletes and sports fans. Team memorabilia and decorations can make the entire party a fun fan fest, or the party could be held at a sporting event.
- Makeover Themes: Teen girls will love a makeover party when they can experiment with hair color, makeup, pedicures, jewelry, and new fashions.
- Video Game Themes: Gamer teens will appreciate a video game party with enough televisions and controllers to organize a gaming competition along with fun snacks and video decorations.
- Yearbook Parties: A yearbook theme is a great opportunity for teens to share school memories and sign one another’s yearbooks. Decorations can include past yearbooks and school decorations, making this a perfect graduation party theme.
- Charity Parties: A unique teen party theme is to include charitable works as a main activity. The party could serve food at a soup kitchen, organize a door-to-door food drive, or help volunteer at a humane society, library, children’s hospital, or other facility. In addition to being a fun party for the guests, it is also a great opportunity to help others.
- Fundraiser Parties: Teens can throw a party to raise money for many causes, whether it is for a school club, team, church, or local charity. The fundraiser can be many different activities, but in the end, both the guests and the recipients of the funds benefit from the party.
- Destination Theme: A party in a specific location naturally creates its own theme, whether it is an overnight zoo experience, an amusement park, miniature golf course, or other destination. Teens will enjoy the opportunity to share the destination with their friends while enjoying the atmosphere of a party.
Avoiding an Overdone Theme
Because teens can be so selective about their interests and any events that involve their friends, it is critical to avoid overdoing teen party themes. A few subtle, coordinated decorations are great, but too many will seem ostentations. For example, there may be sports party gear – cups, napkins, plates, etc. – available in team logos, but by choosing only one item with a logo and using matching solid colors for the other items the theme is visible but not overstated. Other items, such as party favors, hats, and other personalized gear can usually be eliminated from teen parties to keep the theme under control.
When the Theme Flops
Despite the best intentions, occasionally teen party themes just don’t work out. When it flops, it is important to focus on saving the party rather than the theme. Instead of continuing with activities that are receiving a lukewarm reception, give the party guests more leeway to simply enjoy being together and hanging out. If possible, have alternative, low-key decorations and refreshments available as substitutes to keep the party from flopping further.
Teen party themes are generally more subtle and less structured than children’s parties, but that doesn’t mean that themes are out of the question. By choosing a focus that teens will enjoy and keeping it low-key, it is possible to create a memorable teen party with a coordinated theme.

You could also play card games like Uno, Crazy Eights, or Go Fish, so you can have a card-playing casino atmosphere without feeling like you're turning the kids into poker players.
