From LoveToKnow Party
Valentine’s Day cakes are decadent treats with the power to make a romantic holiday even sweeter. From simple heart shapes to elegant Valentine’s Day wedding cakes, there is a delicious confection suitable for any romantic, mid-February celebration.
Why a Cake?
A cake is quick and easy to make or buy, and with so many flavors and textures available, there is a cake out there to please even the most discriminating sweetheart. Cakes are also suitable for classroom parties, weddings, anniversaries, engagement parties, and other celebrations on Valentine’s Day. While some party planners may want to bake the cake themselves, many specialty bakeries offer elaborate confections for this romantic holiday, allowing anyone to indulge in a delicious dessert with minimal effort.
Valentine’s Day Cake Ideas
Everyone is familiar with the basic heart-shaped cake most grocery stores offer, complete with a trio of roses and matching icing accents. There are many more options for unique and romantic cakes, however, and there are many different ways to customize a cake to suit any romantic occasion.
- Size: Valentine’s Day cakes can be as small as gourmet petit fours and classic cupcakes or as large as a multi-tiered wedding cake. Personal-size cakes are easy for a couple to share as a romantic dessert, while larger cakes are great for Valentine’s Day parties.
- Shape: Heart shapes are obviously the most popular for Valentine’s Day, but more unique shapes add flair to the dessert. A double heart, heart with an arrow, Cupid, or other romantic shape can be enjoyable, or any shape – hexagon, circle, rectangle, square, etc. – can be decorated with a Valentine’s Day motif.
- Type of Cake: While classic sponge cakes are popular, cheesecakes, cookie cakes, and molten chocolate cakes are other sweet variations.
- Flavor: White cake is a simple yet elegant choice, but a cake for a Valentine’s Day party can be any flavor. Chocolate is often associated with the holiday, or red velvet cake can make a striking visual presentation as well as a tasty one. Gourmet ingredients such as rich fruits, nuts, chocolate ganache, fudge, sour cream, or liqueur icings can turn a basic flavor into a decadent treat.
- Colors: Regardless of the flavor of the cake, the icing can be colored in any shade or hue. Reds, pinks, and whites are popular Valentine’s Day choices, or more unique colors could blend different shades of pink together or create a rainbow of pastel hearts. For a more dramatic cake, use dark chocolate icing topped with white lace, roses, or hearts.
- Decorations: Valentine’s Day cakes are often elaborately decorated with icing hearts, flowers, and sweet sentiments. Other options include realistic sugar paste or marzipan flowers, whimsical animals or figurines sharing a kiss, chocolate kisses, colored sprinkles, or plastic novelty items such as lips, rings, or Cupid figurines. Abstract swirls can be wistfully romantic, or an understated cake can be romantic with a simple, elegant heart or a single rose. Popular Valentine’s Day candies, such as conversation hearts or chocolate hearts, can also be used as cake decorations.
Valentine Wedding Cakes
A February 14th wedding date demands an exceptionally romantic cake. While the bride and groom can choose any flavor, shape, or size for their cake, most Valentine’s Day weddings include at least some traditional holiday elements, particularly for the cake. All the tiers may be heart-shaped, or the couple may choose a heart or Cupid wedding cake topper. If the couple prefers a more classically-designed cake, other Valentine’s Day accents may be used as decorations or in other parts of the wedding festivities, such as customized heart favors or classic red roses in the bouquet.
Cake Alternatives
Despite all the variations available for a delicious and romantic cake, some people just don’t care for this type of dessert. In that case, there are alternatives that can be just as sweetly decorated or presented. A pie, for example, can be baked in a heart-shaped tin or decorated with cutout crust hearts. Cookies can be easily baked as large hearts or heart-shaped cookie cutters can turn any rolled cookie recipe into a romantic treat. Brownies can also be cut into heart shapes or decorated with icing roses, and many specialty cooking stores offer a range of romantically-themed baking dishes such as rose muffin tins or heart-shaped ramekins to make any type of dessert suitable for Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day cakes are a sweet way to share love and friendship, and with dozens of ways to customize a delicious cake, anyone can find a reason to fall in love with dessert.
