That's such a fun idea, Christine. Our article on Pajama Parties actually has some suggestions for adult pajama parties, including movie marathons and makeovers. If you want to revisit the fun of childhood sleepovers, check out Slumber Party Games for some nostalgic ideas. For food, it depends on the mood. If you want to go a nostalgic and child-like route, it can be a chance to pig-out on "bad for you" foods like pizza and chips. A dessert buffet could be a more mature choice that still lets guests indulge. Have fun!

If your grandma is the nostalgic type, Allie, decade-themed parties can be fun for adults who have seen styles and fads come and go. You could have a 70s disco theme or an 80s party. However, a surprise party doesn't leave much room for getting into costume. Old standbys like a tropical party theme can also be good. If the party is in the next month or two, Spring Party Themes may also give you some ideas.

I am going to throw a surprise birthday party for my grandmother, but I really can't think of a good theme... there will only be 8-10 people.... and only 4 are really her friends. The rest are family.... and me. she will be turning 57 and I have absoloutly NO idea what to do.... Her party will be on a sunday, and we will surprise her on her way home from church. I do know that much. Do you have any ideas or suggestins?

What games you play, Gary, can depend on the overall theme. For instance, if you have a luau, then you can have a limbo contest. If you're going for a traditional "Over the Hill" party, it might be fun to incorporate some geriatric versions of classic party games. For instance, instead of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" you could "Pin the Dentures on Grandma" with a cartoon picture of an older woman. With such a wide variety of ages at your party, anything that will let guests team up is a good idea so five-year-olds aren't playing head-to-head with teenagers. You could play Pictionary or Charades with over-the-hill-related words.

Be sure to check out 50th Birthday Party Ideas for even more ideas. Good luck with your party planning!

Hi, I am 55 years old and have never hosted or planned a 50 year old party and now it is my turn. My wife is turning 50 this year and I want to know what kind of games can we play? There are going to be at least 25 or 30 people there ranging in adults down to toddlers.

It looks like you're off to a good start, Sherell. If you're concerned about your decorations being "too much" then you might want to stop with your planned table cloths, balloons and centerpieces, at least for the main room. I think a well-decorated entrance could really make an impact on your guests. Perhaps an arch decorated in your colors for them to walk under or a line of luminaria to light the path?

Since you're creating a classy setting, I think your next thought should be of how to add class to the food and drinks. Fountains can be a striking accent, either for serving punch or drizzling chocolate for dipping fruit and desserts. An ice sculpture is another possibility.

One last idea is to make sure your invitations match your theme. It can be a great way to really set the stage for your party.

Hi I planning myself a 30th bday and I want everyone to wear black and white and I want the venue to be decorated in with pink black and silver. I've located the centerpeices/favors I want and the colors for the table clothes. Not sure what else to do. Oh and I'm going to have one dozen of black and white balloons. I dont want the decorations to be overbearing or too much. So what else should I do?

I think you could go two different ways with your party, Ginger. You could either focus on the nostalgic fun of a pajama party, or play up the sensual, romantic side of lingerie and nightwear. On the nostalgic side, you could serve junk food, with pizza, pop, and candy. If you're health conscious, substitute healthier versions of these foods, like serving pita chips and hummus instead of potato chips and ranch dip. Scatter sleeping bags and stuffed animals around the room as decorations, and choose bright, childlike colors for accents. For the romantic side of sleepwear, consider gourmet treats and decadent desserts like chocolate-covered strawberries. Drape velvet or silk fabric around the room, and generally use deep, rich colors in any decorations you choose. I hope these ideas help. Thanks for visiting.
