An 18th birthday party can be a lot of fun, Maumi. A murder mystery party could be interesting, and it's a more mature activity fitting of a party for older teens. We also have an article on 18th birthday party games that may give you some ideas. I've started a discussion in our forum, and hopefully you'll get some more suggestions there.

I'm planning on having an 18th birthday party but I am not sure how I want it. It is really hard to decide. I am also looking for a theme that I can have but not sure on that too. Can anyone help me?

Don't be too quick to dismiss parent-approved birthday party ideas. They can still be a lot of fun. However you choose to celebrate, we hope you all stay safe.

haha, mike I agree with you, but that's not the kind of party that parents plan, which is why it's not listed here... hit me up if you're ever in philly and want to party ;)

Sorry these party ideas aren't to your liking, but I hope you understand that not all 18 year olds feel the need to commemorate their birthdays by engaging in forbidden activities. The ideas in this article aim to provide memorable and mature ways to mark the occasion. However, if all of your friends are 18, going somewhere you previously couldn't, such as an 18+ club, could also be a fun way to celebrate.

are you people stupid? I'm about to turn 18 and everything I've read on different sites and this one have the lamest, most boring ideas I've ever heard. Some GOOD ideas would be, going to a club, strip club, party WITH alcohol, etc.. we've already been to amusement parks, and birthday parties and ... like that why would we wanna do it on our 18th birthday? we want to do something were not allowed to do, like party our a-- off and get wasted.

Hiring a party room sounds like a great idea, Amy, if you'd like to take the party outside of your home for a change of pace or to have room for more guests. Carrying the party to a hotel room afterwards seems like it could be asking for trouble. Only you know your friends, though. An alternative could be to get a room afterwards for a small sleepover with only a few of your closest friends?

Wat do you guys think of maybe tryin 2 hire a party room in a hotel and get it all decorated cheaply n mayb spend the nite in the hotel for an 18th bday?

xx

That sounds like a laid-back way to celebrate your birthday, Holly, while still letting you hang out with all your closest friends. Readers from locations where the drinking age is higher than 18 shouldn't try to emulate this plan, though.

definetly having all my guy friends and some girlfriends over for a huge sleepover drinking age is 18 wootwoot (Quebec, Canada) we're just gonna watch some videos to begin with then when my parents leave, bring out the molson! (parents know we're drinking, but they asked me to wait til they leave to start)

That sounds like a great idea, Natasha. Retro themes can be a lot of fun. LoveToKnow Makeup has an article on 80s Makeup that may be helpful.

I was thinking of doing an 'I should have been born in the 80s' sleepover party for my 18th. Basically, everyone will wear 80s makeup and clothes and we'll dance to 80s music and later watch an 80s film in our jammies. And drink copious amounts of fruit punch.

Missy, I am doing a "Diamonds and Ice" theme for my 18th! I'd suggest googling "My super sweet sixteen" and perhaps getting ideas from those over the top parties, and then scaling it down to fit your budget. Heck,I watched VH1's My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding and that's where I got MY theme from!! heh I'm doing a theme because not only do I absolutely LOVE themes, but everyone that I, PERSONALLY, hang out with LOVES themed parties!! Don't be afraid to do something like "Dinner and a Dance". Like perhaps have everyone meet at your home and have a limo pick you guys up, then host a dinner at a nice restaurant and have everyone get dressed up in formal prom gowns and tuxedos {so you can dress up in YOUR prom gown}and then have them come back after dinner in a limo to your home where a DJ will be playing music so you guys can dance. That'd be cool. I know that a party like that would really be fun for me, the partygoer. :) Or maybe have a "Midsummer Nights Dream" party, where people get dressed up in formal wear and dance the night away to the records spun {or CD's played heh} by a DJ at your home or a rec center. You could have decor of fresh flowers and clear lights with a big tent and tables and chairs...you could go over the top with it if you can afford. It all depends on the budget and how over the top you want this! Think about what you're interested in? Sports? Glamourous things like fashion and such? Do you enjoy movies? Ballet? A certain color? Just think about it. If you want, we can correspond and start giving each other more ideas!

Missy, I had an amazin sweet sixteen. My dad found this planning packet online for a Murder Mystery Party. The party was for "Miss State Pageant" winners, so all my friends got to dress like beauty queens and pick their own states. We had a formal dinner, then spent the evening trying to figure out who killed Miss Texas. it was SOOOO MUCH FUN! and we all got to dress pretty. =) just an idea.

A nice dinner can be a good choice for an elegant birthday celebration, Cess, whether you host a formal dinner party in your home or make a reservation at a classy restaurant. However, this could get expensive. You could cut down on the cost by just inviting a few close friends. If you have your heart set on a larger party, your birthday is perfectly suited for a pool party or luau.

Just having fun with your friends sounds like a great plan for celebrating your 18th birthday, Amanda. There's nothing wrong with seeing a movie, but if you want to do something a little out of the ordinary, look for special events in your area. Is there a festival going on, a unique art exhibit or a live concert? Check the entertainment section of your local paper for ideas. To add a new twist to the movie idea, you could also head to an IMAX theater for a memorable experience you won't get every weekend.

Please i need help, have any ideas?

If you'd like to do something "grown-up" Missy, you could host a formal dinner party with dancing afterwards. However, this option could get expensive if you have a large party and need to rent a room and hire a caterer. Having mock ...tails, like the article suggests above, is another option. Think of it as a smaller, more intimate prom.

A black and white color scheme could make a dramatic and formal theme. Decorate the venue in just those two colors, with perhaps silver added as an accent, and ask guests to dress in black and white. If your own dress is a bright color, then you'll just stand out more as the guest of honor.

Man! This is so hard! I'm turning 18 in a few months and I have no idea what to do! I want to throw a party but I want it to be a fancy party so that I can show off this gorgeous dress I was going to wear to prom but changed my mind about. Its beautiful and I still want an excuse to wear it, just not prom, so I thought I'd have some sort of great 18th birthday party that included formal dress but I have no idea how to do it. What kind of theme is that? What do we do at the party? I'm so lost...
