Heather, for upscale decorations, a unified and elegant color scheme can go a long way in setting the tone. If you choose silver or gold as one of your colors, stay away from overly shiny metallic decorations, as these may look cheap. Another detail that will make the entire dinner seem classy is to make sure you're using quality table linens and place settings. Nothing will ruin the elegant mood faster than plastic forks.

Chicken is usually the best choice for a budget dinner, and it can be dressed up with sauces and garnishes. Potatoes are a good choice for a side dish that is relatively cheap but can be prepared in elegant ways, such as Duchesse Potatoes. For desserts, rich options like cheesecakes and mousses will seem more upscale.

I hope this helps give you some ideas to work with.

I have a Mom's Club that I have been asked to host a Gourmet Dinner Party for 9 couples (18 total) and the dinner will be in April. I LOVED the idea of the "Tax Break" Dinner Party or a Gourment Cafeteria Night, but am having trouble with a menu and more upscale decorations. Do you have any suggestions? It will be inside and will be a sit down and groups are not familiar with each other yet. Thank you!!
